Vandals target house of Sinn Féin MLA

Mon, Apr 06, 2009

Vandals threw a rock at the house of Sinn Féin Assembly member Mitchel McLaughlin early this morning.

A rock was thrown at the window at the front of the Derry property at around 5am. Mr McLaughlin was woken by the noise, but nobody was injured.

The window was reinforced and didn’t completely break.

“Anybody who has to come in the dark of night to put a brick through anyone’s window can’t be described as anything other than a coward,” he said.

“As I understand it there was a number of other incidents last night so there are clearly people running around up to mischief. If the intention was to intimidate people then they need to learn it’s not going to work.”

Mr McLaughlin's home has been attacked before and he has previously been warned of a threat to his life.

“These things happen, it seems to go with the territory of trying to make politics work,” he added.

Sinn Fein MLAs under attack

Published Date:  06 April 2009

HOMES linked to senior elected republican representatives have been targeted.

During the early hours of Monday morning, a window at the home of Mitchel McLaughlin in Londonderry was shattered.

No-one was injured in the rock-throwing incident.

The MLA, who represents the South Antrim constituency but lives in the north west, warned the culprits his family would not be intimidated.

"As I understand it there was a number of other incidents last night so there are clearly people running around up to mischief," he said.

A suspect device was also left at the former home of Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, who also resides in Londonderry.

Last month, following the death of two soldiers and a PSNI officer by dissident republicans, Mr McGuinness referred to the perpetrators as "traitors".

It is not known if rogue republican elements were responsible for the incidents.
