Pòl Returned to General Population

We wish to thank everyone who intervened on Pòl’s behalf we received a phone call from Pòl that he has been returned to general population, the authorities claim it was a miscommunication and it has been resolved.

We just spoke to Pòl and he asked that we thank everyone for their support and it is greatly appreciated.

Again many thanks to everyone who called, the quick reaction from Pòl’s friends and supporters no doubt influenced the authorities, a special thanks to The Irish Echo (see below) who had the story online within the hour on Pòl and his move to the punishment block.

We have found out in the past that they monitor activity on the web about Pòl very closely and we have no doubt the reaction resulted in Pòl being put back in general population

Pol Brennan Moved to Punishment Wing

By Ray O'Hanlon
[email protected]

July 10, 2009 Pól Brennan has been moved to the punishment block of the Texas prison where he has been held for most of the last eighteen months.

Sean Maguire, a Wisconsin-based leader of the Brennan campaign in the U.S., told the Echo Friday that Brennan had been moved into a wing of the Port Isabel Detention Center known as "The Shoe."

"Pól doesn't know why he has been moved. There has been no explanation. They won't answer his questions," Maguire said.

"He was simply told to report to processing and that they were moving him into the punishment block," Maguire said.

Papers that were required to facilitate Brennan's deportation from the U.S. recently expired and it will take several weeks for them to be replaced.

Brennan's case is, meanwhile, being reviewed by the Department of Homeland Security.

Brennan has been hoping that enough political support will weigh in behind him to allow him to stay in the country he has called home since the 1980s.

The Brennan campaign is hoping that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will exercise her authority under a section of the Immigration and Nationality Act and over-ride a decision of the Immigration Board of Appeal that went against Brennan.

A federal immigration judge ruled last November that Maze escapee Brennan should be deported.

Brennan, 56, was one of 38 IRA prisoners who escaped from Long Kesh prison in 1983. He fled to the U.S. and lived for a time under a false name in the San Francisco area.

In recent years he has lived openly under his own name. The British government ended efforts to secure his extradition in the wake of the Good Friday Agreement, which Brennan supports.

On January 27 last year, while driving with Joanna Volz, his U.S. citizen wife of over 20 years, to visit friends in Texas, Brennan was detained at an immigration checkpoint because his U.S.-issued work permit had expired. While he had applied to renew the document, authorities had not sent it to him.

We received a phone call from Pòl this morning July 10th around 9 o'clock am stating he had been told to report to Processing with his stuff, We again heard from Pòl at 11:15 am. He is now in the SHU (Punishment Block) and the authorities will not give him a reason for this move. He asked if he had committed any infraction and has been told nothing, they refuse to explain.

We are shocked and horrified at this move and would ask everyone to contact their elected representatives and ask them to inquire why Pòl is being punished also if people can phone the Detention Center and ask why Pòl Brennan has been returned to Isolation this is our only way of letting the authorities know that Pòl’s case is important to us and we will not allow him to be singled out for fighting his case against deportation and stay quiet.
